Lucasfilm announced today that STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS would not be returning for a sixth season on Cartoon Network.
Production however will continue on new story arcs to be released at a later date. Supervising Director Dave Filoni appeared in a video message (viewable below) accompanying the announcement to provide further details regarding the decision and to introduce a clip from one of the aforementioned new arcs, which indicates that Order 66 will be examined in greater detail when the series returns in whatever format is chosen.
While this is sad news for a series that did much to legitimize the prequel era of the franchise, the announcement suggests that a new hope for fans of animated STAR WARS is on the horizon.
From the press release: As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next STAR WARS trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new STAR WARS series set in a time period previously untouched in STAR WARS films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come.
