Silver Apex AwardThis week’s announcement of the new STAR WARS REBELS animated series was a huge step in the right direction.  I have loved STAR WARS since childhood, but it’s been a long time since any news from the galaxy far, far away has stirred that loving feeling in me so keenly.

For the record, I like the STAR WARS prequels.  They tell an epic story that serves as a grand backdrop to the most amazing film saga of all time.  The problem with the prequels is that they weren’t executed as well as they should have been.  Most of the acting was flat, much of the writing felt forced, and the direction always seemed more focused on the action sequences or technical achievements than on character, where it belonged.  Despite all of that, the prequels are still part of the larger STAR WARS story, so I remain a devoted fan.

I’m an even bigger fan of the STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS animated series.  Dave Filoni and company did a most impressive job of taking the story threads of the prequel films and breathing kinetic and exciting new life into them, even introducing a few new iconic characters of their own in the process.  The stories they told during their five-year run truly made the prequel era feel like a worthy addition to the STAR WARS saga.  But when you know how the story ends, watching it unfold is never going to be as exciting as it would be with that added element of the unknown.

I’ve wanted… no, needed STAR WARS to give me that same feeling of adventure and excitement it did when I was a kid.  I crave these things in my STAR WARS, I think we all do.  No matter how much we may have liked the stories of the prequel era, they never felt completely STAR WARS.  We need to witness the desperate struggle of a small band of freedom fighters as they rise against the oppressive might of an all-powerful galactic empire determined to extinguish the flames of peace and justice throughout the galaxy.

The announcement of STAR WARS: REBELS confirms that Lucasfilm, under new management by Disney and Kathleen Kennedy, understands this.  Even better, they seem determined to actually give STAR WARS fans what we want.  Tie Fighters, X-Wings, Stormtroopers, Star Destroyers… the list goes on into infinity, but infinity isn’t a problem for this beloved franchise.  And it’s all coming in Fall 2014, just over a year away!

At last, it finally feels like we’re going to see a return to the STAR WARS that we love, the STAR WARS we remember (with bonus characters), the STAR WARS we expected to see at midnight, May 19, 1999.  And if this series is any indication, we’ll get a fantastic live action continuation of that brand of STAR WARS on the big screen soon after.

For eliciting this monster STAR WARS geek out in me, for making me believe in the future of STAR WARS in a way I haven’t for a long time, Lucasfilm’s announcement of STAR WARS REBELS is the winner of this week’s Silver Apex Award.  This is where the fun begins…
