The Apex Award represents the pinnacle of the past week in pop culture. This week’s winner is…
NBC this week renewed HANNIBAL, stunning the world with the revelation that the network is capable of making a good decision. The second season, consisting of an additional thirteen episodes, will air in 2014.
The intricately constructed and finely portrayed series is based on characters from Thomas Harris’ novels featuring Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), and Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne).
While I’ll never forgive NBC for its poor handling of the outstanding KINGS in 2009, I’m impressed by their renewal of HANNIBAL. While critically acclaimed, the show isn’t exactly a ratings powerhouse and its future was uncertain just days ago. With the renewal, NBC demonstrates its confidence in showrunner Bryan Fuller’s (PUSHING DAISIES) plan to build towards a season long adaptation of RED DRAGON in year four.
NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke stated, “We’re so proud of Bryan’s vision for a show that is richly textured, psychologically complex, and very compelling. There are still many great stories still to be told.”
For giving the green light to thirteen more of those great stories, and recognizing that great television should actually stay on television (even if it was after two weeks of indecision) NBC’s renewal of HANNIBAL wins this week’s Apex Award.
